La Monastica, Tuscany
A few slow days in a former monastery
by Anastasia Bluhm
There are places that impress you immediately, and there are places that unfold gently over time. La Monastica belongs entirely to the second category.

Arriving in the late afternoon, I watched the Tuscan hills shift into warm gold as the former 16th-century monastery appeared behind cypress trees and olive groves. The building carries its history lightly — Renaissance arches, pale stone walls, symmetrical lines — yet nothing feels frozen in the past. It feels lived in, softened by light and intention.

From the very beginning, the atmosphere invites you to slow down.

A Monastery with a Long Life

La Monastica began its story in the early 1500s as the Monastery of Santa Scolastica, built for a community of nuns seeking peace and purpose. For centuries this place lived through changes — expansions, periods of abandonment, transformations, and moments when it almost disappeared into time itself.

The reconstruction of the monastery as a resort was a long, deliberate process that began in 2005 and continued for nearly two decades. Architects, historians, and master artisans worked with meticulous care to preserve original stone, restore architectural details, and revive fresco fragments while integrating modern comforts in a way that feels utterly natural.

After years of restoration that respected both form and spirit, the convent reopened its doors as La Monastica Resort & Spa in 2024, transforming forgotten cells into elegant rooms and the ancient chapel into an atmospheric restaurant overlooking the valley below.

Walking through the cloister today, you sense continuity rather than revival — centuries of quiet life preserved rather than erased.
The Spa — Silence Within Stone

The spa at La Monastica feels like a continuation of the monastery’s original purpose: retreat and renewal. You descend through softly lit stone corridors into spaces that echo with calm, where steam rises beneath vaulted ceilings and warm water invites you to unwind. Treatments are anchored in nature — botanical oils, soothing scents, and gentle rituals that ease both mind and body.

It never feels like indulgence for its own sake, but rather an invitation to breathe more slowly and fully. Here, relaxation isn’t loud; it’s intrinsic to your surroundings.

The Pools — Afternoons in Light

Outside, the pool area opens toward the rolling hills of Tuscany, every shade of green and gold under the sun. The space feels generous without crowding, quiet without feeling empty. Guests drift in the water, read under the sky, or simply watch the light shift across the landscape.
Lying on my back in the water, the sky felt impossibly wide — as if time itself had halted just to linger with us.

Cuisine — Rooted in Tuscany

Dinner at La Monastica is served beneath stone vaults where candlelight reveals texture in every corner. The menu is a tribute to the region — handmade pasta, seasonal vegetables, cheeses sourced nearby, and olive oil so fresh it tastes of sun and wind.

Each dish feels honest, connected to the land rather than contrived for effect. Wine is poured slowly, courses arrive with harmony, and conversations stretch into the night without urgency.

My personal recommendation: do not miss the opportunity to order their hot chocolate at breakfast. This is not merely a drink but a true ritua

The hotel features distinct dining venues to suit every occasion. Rivage Café provides all-day dining with casual elegance, focusing on seasonal local products. As evening falls, Rivage Café becomes the social heart, where expertly crafted cocktails are served amidst soft lighting and historic Pompeii-styled frescoes.

Each space maintains the hotel's signature commitment to excellence, from morning meals to evening drinks.
Art, Interiors, and the Magic of Light

The interior design of Beau-Rivage is a masterclass in preserving heritage while ensuring contemporary comfort. The hotel passionately preserves its yesteryear charm, with interiors that pay tribute to the architectural style that has shaped its history .

One of the most fascinating discoveries was in Rivage Café, where renovations in the early 2000s uncovered fragments of Pompeii-styled frescoes . These ancient-art-inspired artworks now share space with modern comforts, creating a unique dialogue between past and present.

Throughout the hotel, the lighting and light fixtures are carefully curated to enhance the elegant atmosphere. From the grand, timeless chandeliers in common areas to the sophisticated, warm lighting in the suites, every detail contributes to a sense of discreet and refined luxury . The view of the iconic Jet d'Eau fountain, beautifully framed by the windows and often illuminated in the evening, becomes a living part of the hotel's interior canvas.
The Heartbeat of the Hotel

Beyond the physical beauty, what truly sets Beau-Rivage apart is its atmosphere. As a member of both The Leading Hotels of the World and Swiss Deluxe Hotels, it maintains a standard of impeccable, discreet service . The staff anticipates needs without being intrusive, creating an environment where you feel genuinely cared for.

An evening at the bar, whether enjoying a expertly crafted cocktail or, as one traveler aptly noted, "the best hot chocolate we've had...it is Switzerland after all!" is the perfect epilogue to any day . It's in these moments—sipping a drink, surrounded by soft light and the gentle hum of conversation—that you understand the timeless appeal of this extraordinary place.
Final Impressions

My stay at the Beau-Rivage Geneva was more than a luxury getaway; it was an immersion into a living heritage. It’s a place where you can sleep in a suite dedicated to a literary legend, dine in a room where history was shaped, and unwind in spaces adorned with discovered art.

For the discerning traveler seeking a hotel with a soul, a stay at Beau-Rivage is not just recommended—it's essential. It stands as a testament to the fact that true luxury isn't about opulence alone, but about story, character, and a timeless dedication to the art of hospitality.
